Blood Pressure Home Monitoring

You will be asked to provide a refundable cash only £10 deposit for the loan of a blood pressure machine from the practice. This will be returned to you in full when you return your blood pressure monitor at the 8 days loan.

Monitoring your blood pressure at home can give a more accurate picture of your blood pressure as you go about your everyday life. This will help to give the doctor/nurse a more accurate picture of your blood pressure over time.

Please read all instructions before starting:

  • Please monitor and record your blood pressure at home for 8 consecutive days. Readings should be recorded to be submitted via our Blood Pressure Review form at the end of the 8 days.
  • On each day, monitor your blood pressure on two occasions, in the morning and again in the evening.
  • On each occasion take a minimum of two readings, leaving at least a minute between each. Use the table overleaf to record all of your readings.
  • In the comments section please write down anything that could have affected your reading, such as feeling unwell or changes in your medication.

Taking your blood pressure:

  • Get yourself comfortably seated for at least 5 minutes, try to relax and not move around.
  • Rest your arm at the level of your heart (such as on a table). Ensure no tight clothing constricts the arm.
  • Place the cuff on, with the arrow stating ‘Artery’ over the inner centre of your elbow. The bottom of the cuff should be approximately 2cm above the bend in your elbow.
  • Press the start button. Note the measurement down.
  • Wait one minute.
  • Take your blood pressure again and record the number.

When you have taken all of your measurements, please fill out and submit a Blood Pressure Review form. Your results will then be averaged and reviewed by the doctor – this can take up to 5 working days.

If you have not heard from the surgery within 7 working days, please contact our reception team for advice on further action.
