Minor Injury Service at West Berkshire Community Hospital

We are a nurse-led service, providing treatment for people with minor injuries at the West Berkshire Community Hospital near Newbury.

Conditions treated

We will see anyone who comes to the Minor Injury Unit. If we are unable to help you, we will direct you to the most appropriate service, for example if you have a minor ailment or illness we will suggest you arrange to see your own doctor (GP).

We are able to treat a very wide range of minor injuries and conditions including:

  • allergic reactions i.e. wasp stings
  • bites and bruises
  • cuts, including some facial cuts
  • dislocated toes and fingers
  • emergency contraception for women over 14 years
  • falls but not if there is any loss of consciousness (please visit your local Accident and Emergency or call 999)
  • foreign bodies
  • uncomplicated fractures
  • some head injuries
  • minor injuries to eyes and ears
  • most lacerations
  • minor burns
  • minor injuries after a road accident i.e. neck strain, cuts, bruises
  • minor sports injuries
  • sprains and strains

What makes us special?

The Minor Injuries Unit at West Berkshire Community Hospital has two practitioners on duty at all times and sees about 20,000 people a year. We are specialists in dealing with minor injuries and have nurse practitioners and paramedic practitioners who have had years of experience dealing with all age ranges. We have an excellent record for hitting our national performance indicators and last year treated 99.22% of patients within the 4 hour target

X-ray information

X-ray is available if the practitioner deems it necessary Monday to Friday 08.30 – 17.00. An on-call service is offered outside these hours for urgent investigations only.

If you have a X-ray request from your GP then you will need to attend the X-ray department between 09.00 and 15.30 hours. You do not need to been seen by the Minor Injuries Team unless you are advised to do so by the X-ray department. The results will be sent to the GP who made the request.

Accessing the service

You can come directly to the Minor Injuries Unit at West Berkshire Community Hospital, or you may be referred by your GP. You do not need an appointment
If you are referred by your GP please bring a referral letter with you.
