We wish to offer our sincere sympathy to you, your family and friends in your bereavement.

In most cases, the death certificate stating the cause of death will be emailed directly to the Registrar by the Medical Examiner at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

They will endeavour to complete this within five days, although this may take longer during busy weekends, after weekends, bank holidays and following long public holidays.

If the death has to be referred to the Coroner for further investigation, there may be a delay in the completing of the death certificate.

The Medical Examiner will contact you when the death certificate has been emailed to the Registrar. You will not be able to make an appointment to register the death until the death certificate has been completed and emailed to the Registrar. The Registrar may contact you to arrange an appointment.

You can contact your chosen funeral directors while you are waiting for the completion of the death certificate. We do advise that you do not set a date for the funeral until you know that the death certificate has been completed.

If you have any questions regarding the death certificate, or cause of death, please contact the Medical Examiner's Office: 0118 932 28066
